Darling Street
Darling Street runs the full length of the peninsula from East Balmain to Rozelle — one of the longest village main streets in inner Sydney. The best stretch from the London Hotel south to the post office is where the suburb's personality is most concentrated: Victoire for pastries, Elio for Italian, independent gift shops and bookstores that haven't been displaced by pharmacy chains, and the Saturday market spilling onto the footpath.
The London Hotel's courtyard — shaded by a mature fig tree, strung with lights, open for lunch — is one of the great pub courtyards in Sydney and operates precisely as it has for decades. The Balmain Hotel on Darling Street does much the same thing on the other side of the street. Between them they handle most of the suburb's social life without requiring anyone to cross a boundary.
